This review comes late considering that the album was released almost two months ago. So those who wanted it, already have it. I would still like to give my 2cents. Like the title says, the album is good, but not great. I found that after listening to the whole album, something was missing. Have you ever watched a movie, and at the end your like “that’s it!” I kind of had that filling after listening to this album. Now I might be at fault for my high anticipation of its release. It is not often when I go purchase an album the day it is released. I have not done that in a long time. Probably not since the ’80s or early ’90s when Van Halen was still pumping out tunes and some of the new grunge was coming onto the scene. So I was ready for this album. It just wasn’t one of those albums that would make me call up my friends and tell them to “check this shit out!” It just didn’t move me. The first song “Avenida Revolution” was OK. I would have expected the first song from a band like this to have knocked me on my ass. “Soap on a Rope”, “Down the Drain”, and “Turnin’ Left” were the best songs on the album. “Down the Drain” probably had the best groove. Satriani did his best work on “Turnin’ Left.” “Learning to Fall” and “Future in the Past” were really good ballads. “My Kinda Girl” sucked. Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony had good harmonies just like the Van Halen days. Chad Smith is tight on the drums. Satriani is good, but I felt like I was cheated. I was expecting more powerful solos from him and they did not occur. I realize that this is a band and not Satriani doing a solo album. When you have a talent like Joe Satriani in your band, you make damn sure he is noticed at every opportunity. I do not think they capitalized on his talent. Overall the album is good, I enjoyed it. It was worth $10. I would like to see these guys live, that would be a whole other story. I would be willing to bet the live show kicks ass. Sammy Hagar is good at making 20,000 people feel like their his best friend. I hope they put out another album, chemistry gets better with age. On a five star rating, I give it a four.
“Chickenfoot” – Good…Not Great
